A festival celebrating the Pacific Coast’s most omnipresent meteorological phenomenon, the gray stuff, will be held in Pacifica on Sept. 27-28. The main event will be preceded by a related surf-casting contest tomorrow, 4-7 p.m., at Sharp Park Beach. COUSTEAU SHIP HERE
The Cousteau Society’s unique new research vessel - the wind-powered Alcyone - is scheduled to visit San Francisco on Saturday, September 27, as part of a television documentary project along the west coast of North America.
Plans call for the 103-foot-long ship to dock at Pier 41 and be on public display for the day, although boarding will not be allowed.
Boats from San Francisco’s Red & White Fleet will offer excursions on the bay to greet the Alcyone as she comes under the Golden Gate Bridge Saturday morning. Members of the Cousteau Society will be aboard each boat to discuss the expedition. Costs: $8.95 for adults, $5.95 for the elderly and $3.95 for children. Information: 415-546-2800.
Alcyone, which uses two Turbosail cylinders for harnessing wind, is spending two days at the Farallon Islands before her S.F. visit. A film crew is shooting for future documentaries as part of a five-year “Rediscovery of the World” expedition.
ADVENTURES AUCTION
The Trail Information and Volunteer Center (serving San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and San Francisco counties) will hold its fund-raising auction next Sunday, 1-6 p.m., at the San Mateo County Mounted Patrol Grounds and arena.
Items to be auctioned off include horseback excursions; whitewater raft trips; gear for hikers, bikers and riders, and gift certificates. The $5 admission will provide a catered lunch, horse-drawn carriage rides, and admission to live and silent auctions.
To reach the event site, take Highway 280 to the Woodside/Highway 84 exit, then head west through Woodside. After another half-mile, veer right on King’s Mountain Road. After a mile you’ll see a sign on the left for the grounds.
For an informational flier, phone 415-968-7065.
MASSAGE SEMINARS
Pioneers in sports massage therapy will offer workshops in their techniques for preventing and treating stress and injury for both professional and amateur athletes. Their system, developed at the 1984 Olympics, is accessible to those working in physical or massage therapy, or those who’ve had training in physiology and massage.
Workshop dates are Oct. 11-12, Nov. 1-7 and 22-23, and Dec. 13-14. For more information, and to reserve a space, phone Joan Marie Passalacqua at 415-848-1793.
